To a Golem
Tomaž Šalamun
Lost in thought,
you came to watch me.
I’m like an olive branch – your face.
Houses are on fire in the sun.
The bridge is pasted together stone by stone
and the sky keeps gnawing.
The hands are seizing me.
I hear the motioin of soft nibs.
Smoke rises out of me.
I evaporate into you, tasting your
fruit, passerby.
The sheep scratches herself on the rock,
the windows are wiped in a dream.
Sweet rehearsing pours over me.
I’m folding your door latches.
I shuck the black, silky
festive hall of your warm breath,
the impermanence of your life.

Season
Wole Soyinka
Rust is ripeness, rust.
And the wilted corn-plume.
Pollen is mating-time when swallows
weave a dance.
Of feathered arrows
Thread corn-stalks in winged
Streaks of light. And we loved to hear
Spliced phrases of the wind, to hear
Rasps in the field, where corn-leaves
pierce like bamboo slivers.
Now, garnerers we,
Awaiting rust on tassels, draw
Long shadows from the dusk, wreathe
The thatch in wood-smoke. Laden stalks
Ride the germ's decay-we await
The promise of the rust.

Ten years
Yang Lian
Time passes like a fish swimming towards its own flavour
Cliff not under your feet.......Years
Emptier than a word.......Sea wall
Sharp nipples suckling the storm
Rocks are not there.......You are turned like a brass screw and rust
In the armpits of sparkling waves.......Epitaph of a sunken ship
A name swathed in fish scales
Sloughs off fleshy curves.......Art of cloistering jellyfish
This blank expanse called water.......Turns sweet
Is called old.......Sunlight with the pull of a magnet
Ten summers in your lungs
Trims back.......The black water level in a haemorrhaging garden
Reflections in the harbour dance upside down
Trying to remember.......A nature like yours someone had left behind
Gulping down a glass of sour self-brewed beer in the kitchen
Like pouring it into the sink.......The graduate skeleton spits out
another zero

Sanctuary
Matthew Sweeney
Stay awhile. Don't go just yet.
The sirens are roaming the streets,
the stabbing youths are out in packs,
there's mayhem in the tealeaves.
You're much better off staying here.
I have a Bordeaux you'll like,
let's open it. (I've a second bottle, too.)
And a goat's cheese to fast for,
and a blue from the Vale of Cashel —
and the source of the bread stays secret.
Was I expecting you to stay?
No, I always eat like this.
Hear that — wasn't it a gunshot?
Come closer, turn the music up.
Maybe we should dim the lights.
Let's clink our glasses to each other
if no better toast comes to mind.
I told you you'd ooh! at the cheese —
here, have some more. A top up?
You're the kind of girl I like.
Listen, that was definitely a bomb.
Maybe the civil war has started,
the one they've all been promising.
Well, there's nowhere to go now,
so let's kill the lights and retire.

Caro,
Domeneck
